Discover how Cynthia Erivo prepared to play the Queen of Soul in Genius: Aretha, the first-ever scripted series on legendary singer Aretha Franklin. She will be presented with the Spotlight Award.

Erivo broke out as Celie in the Broadway and West End productions of The Color Purple, earning her a Daytime Emmy Award, a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, and a Tony Award for Best Actress. In 2019, her leading role in Kasi Lemmons' critically acclaimed film Harriet garnered her Golden Globe and Oscar nominations — as did the film's title song "Stand Up," which Erivo co-wrote and performed. Erivo recently starred in the HBO limited series The Outsider, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, and can soon be seen as Franklin in National Geographic's Emmy-winning anthology Genius, which premieres in March 2021. Erivo will also star in the upcoming film Talent Show and a future biopic about Nigerian princess Sara Forbes Bonnetta. She plans to release her first album with Verve/Universal Music Group in 2021.
